How to Grow Your Show with SEO featuring Deirdre Tshien of Capsho
Tuesday Oct 25, 2022
Tuesday Oct 25, 2022
Do you want your podcast to rank higher in search engines?
Deirdre Tshien from Capsho is sharing the solution – The SEO strategy for podcasts – so that you can get your podcast to the top of the search results. "The more simple that you can make it, the more that you can break down your sentences so that they're short and sharp and snappy and get to the point. Then that's going to be better for the machine to read it. But it's also actually going to be better.."Deirdre Tshien is the founder of Capsho, an AI-powered podcast copywriter that creates episode show notes, descriptions, social media posts, captions, promotional emails, blog posts, and transcripts in under 10 minutes. She is also the host of Grow My Podcast Show, a podcast for podcasters looking to grow their show. This is Deirdre Tshien's story...I was first introduced to podcasting when my mentor suggested it as a platform to build my credibility and authority. I was new to the tech and set up, but I decided to just start anyway. After a few months, I realized that I wanted an ROI on the time I was putting into podcasting and I started to look into ways to grow my show. That's when I discovered SEO. SEO is the practice of optimizing your web content to make it more visible to search engines. I realized that if I could make my podcast more visible to search engines, I would have a better chance of being discovered by new listeners. I've since transitioned away from social media and towards SEO as my primary method of marketing my podcast. In this episode, you will learn the following:1. How to make the most of your podcast collateral2. How to make an impact with your podcast3. How SEO can help you grow your podcast

Chapter Summaries:[00:00:01] - Podcasting Smarter is the official podcast from Podbean. In today's episode, Norma Jean Belenky and Deirdre Tshien of Capsho will talk about SEO best practices and how to make the most of your podcast collateral to grow your podcast.[00:00:47] - Capsho is an AI powered podcast copywriter. It creates episodes, show notes, description, social media, captions, promotional email, blog post, YouTube, LinkedIn article and full transcript in under 10 minutes. It is the fastest way that podcasts can promote and grow their podcast shows.[00:01:48] - Deirdre got into podcasting in 2020 when she was coaching e-commerce business owners on how to grow their businesses. She didn't know what she was doing at first, but after 3 months of consistent podcasting, she realized she was getting a lot of downloads and conversions from her podcast.[00:04:22] - SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. Google is the biggest search engine and YouTube is owned by Google. There are many factors that go into SEO such as the keywords, rich media, relevant images and videos, backlinks and social media. Having a content-forward approach is important.[00:06:31] - SEO maximization is important for a business. When she first started podcasting, Deirdre focused more on driving traffic to her podcast through social media. Now she's focusing more on SEO and thinks it's more valuable for his business than social media because it's a long-term strategy.[00:08:45] - SEO is the foundation of podcasting. Google wants to surface more podcasts. As part of search, Google is going to focus more on text-based search. Podcasting is a hot medium and everyone wants a piece of it. SEO improves the searchability and longevity of a podcast.[00:11:47] - SEO is a combination of technical and content aspects of search engine optimization. It's important to make sure that you are targeting things that people are searching for. Moz gives you an indication as to whether the keywords you're using is going to rank. People generally only take information at a fourth grade level. People should always look at how readable their stuff is. Rich media includes things other than the words. Google loves images and videos as it gives it more things to look into. If you're writing everything yourself and you're not writing it within the understanding of AI, you may not rank as high.[00:19:05] - The more content you have out there, the more credibility you are building. With a search engine like Google, for example, backlinks are a way to build authority and credibility. Promotional swaps and blog swaps are also good ways to get those backlinks.[00:21:40] - SEO is the process of setting up a formula for consistently hitting these SEO benchmarks in podcasting. A lot of people enter the podcasting space as a creative outlet to use their voice, to hone their voice, and to make sure their voice is heard. Some podcasts are solo and some are guest based, which makes starting from SEO keyword search a lot more difficult. [00:28:30] - In terms of podcasting. Making sure that your content is SEO optimized also benefits accessibility for your podcast. People consume information in different ways, so repurposing the podcast into an SEO optimized form like a blog post makes it more accessible for people who don't learn through an auditory way.[00:30:17] - Deirdre believes that podcasting is going to keep growing. Short form content is the future of the industry. People's attention spans are getting shorter. People can listen to audio content while they're doing other things. [00:32:14] - Deirdre Tshien started in entrepreneurship over nine years ago. She likes listening to Brene Brown's podcasts, Darling to Lead. Deirdre is also a big fan of the How I Built This podcast.

John is Director of Customer Success with Podbean and he works with Enterprise and High Traffic Podcasters. John and Kerry are excited to talk about ads today.[00:03:20] - The power of podcasting is the length of engagement that people listen to podcasts as opposed to other media. The bigger the audience, the more opportunity for monetization and the more people listening who may want to buy the product that is featured on the podcast.[00:04:59] - A podcast ad is an effective way to promote your podcast and grow your audience. The trust with the audience and the emotional component of audio are key to the success of a podcast ad. John and Kerry are going to talk about host read versus pre-produced ads later.[00:07:06] - Kerry explains why podcasting is a good medium for advertisers and brands. Bryan Barletta, who runs Sounds Profitable, talks about best practice for making an ad and how to match the right content with the right audience in the podcast. 70% of people who listen to a podcast ad are either going to the site or checking out the discount.[00:11:21] - John and Kerry talk about the best practices for podcasting ads. John explains how to create an effective ad for the podcasting environment. John recommends making it succinct and making sure that the message is what the message needs to be. No more, no less.[00:15:29] - In a direct response ad, there are three things to consider: the goal, the target audience and the budget. If it's pure branding, it's more about the value of the brand. Direct response is all about ROI. It's the same way as you would track it going into the store.[00:16:33] - Attribution is easier digitally than it is on broadcast. Dynamic ad insertion is where the podcaster can insert a fresh ad into the entire back catalog of a podcast show. There's a difference between dynamic ad insertion and baked in ad insertion and it's important to distinguish between the two.[00:18:50] - When making a podcast ad, it's important to make sure that the message is clear and the call to action is clear. Branding is also important, and so is the frequency of the message. Podcasts are able to reach a lot of people, and the power of audio is getting better. In podcast ads, the host speaks about his or her personal experience with the product and explains why he or she thinks it's good for the advertiser to do that. In podcasting, there is a trust between the listener and the host. The medium that we listen to podcasts on (most people listen via their phone...)[00:25:34] - Podbean has 34,000 podcasts and is looking for host ads. The best way for brands to reach out to a podcaster is via direct communication with dynamic ad insertion technology. The host read as is the host speaking within the actual ad. Podbean approaches certain advertising agencies who have certain brands and they will talk to the brands. One of the largest advertisers in podcasting is going to do a three-week test of their ad campaign with Podbean for three times frequency for that week and then it will be for a number of separate weeks. Ad campaigns are more personal with podcast advertising than with traditional radio.[00:31:14] - The length of engagement with podcasts is important in terms of building a brand and building a good business model. You want to get the highest quality recording and the same quality for the ad that they would for the show. Pre-rolls before the show are the best format for ads. 30 seconds is best for pre-rolls.[00:35:45] - There are three positions within ads for podcasting: preroll, Mid-roll and Post-roll. Pre-roll is right before the episode airs, preroll is in the middle of the episode and post is after the episode. Post-rolls are either promoting their next show or cross promoting other podcasts.[00:38:58] - Kerry explains programmatic podcast advertising and how it works. It's based on DSP and DSP has been around for a while. In the digital side, it can be used by brands like Coca Cola, American Express or Rolls Royce. It is one of the strongest mediums from that perspective in terms of outreach.[00:44:37] - John and Kerry talk about how to produce high quality audio in 2022. They also discuss how to create custom music for ads. John explains how to make sure that people remember your brand, even if they don't want to buy your product. At the moment, it costs about $1000 for a host to read an ad, but Podbean can do an announcer read ad for $100. Podbean wants its podcasters to be successful in their ad campaigns and keep podcasting, so it's something they want to join.[00:50:07] - Kerry explains the difference between host-read ads and announcer read ads and that programmatic is the only way to create large-scale ad campaigns in the podcasting industry.[00:53:43] - Podbean has a couple of options for brands looking to launch a podcast. There are self serve and managed options while programmatic is more suited for the larger brands. There will be some announcements over the next month or two on the programmatic side. [00:55:47] - Podcasters can run their ads on other podcasts using the same engine of the Ads Marketplace and Dynamic Ad Insertion. There are a couple of different pre-made templates with impressions and cost per that you can use to run anywhere from a 7 day to a 30 day campaign to run your shows.[00:57:58] - Podbean hosted a live panel on how to make a podcast ad today. The panel was hosted by Norma Jean Belenky and featured Kerry Tracy, Senior Vice President of Advertising, and John Kiernan, Director of Customer Success. Next month's live panel will discuss how to become a podcast editor using your podcast skills for freelance remote work.Other episodes you'll enjoy:

How to Create a Top Branded Podcast with Chris O’Keeffe from JAR Audio
Tuesday Oct 11, 2022
Tuesday Oct 11, 2022
Want to know what goes into making a top branded podcast? "If you can continually deliver on that stuff without hitting them with a hard sell, you have an audience. And that's different than a customer, right? But with time, you can evolve some of that audience into customers, and it's getting easier and easier to tell the ROI"Chris O'Keeffe is an Executive Producer with JAR Audio, a full-service branded podcast agency. Chris has over 7 years of experience in the audio industry, and has worked on a variety of projects, from audio dramas to branded podcasts. This is Chris' story...I'm Chris O'Keeffe from JAR Audio, and today I'm here to talk about branded podcasting. Branded content differs from a hard sell in that it's all about storytelling and building relationships over the long term. This medium is still new, so there are a lot of skills that are transferable from other industries. For example, at JAR Audio, we work with brands to create custom branded podcasts. We start with strategy and then move on to creation, production, marketing, and reporting. It's important to have a robust mix of marketing approaches, but storytelling is something completely different. If you can entertain or educate without asking for anything in return, you have an audience. And with time, you can evolve some of that audience into customers. In this episode, you will learn the following:1. What goes into making a top branded podcast, including market research, production and content strategy?2. How can audio storytelling be used to build relationships and achieve marketing goals?3. What are some examples of branded podcasts that have been particularly successful?Resources:

Chapter Summaries:[00:00:01] - Podbean's Podcasting smarter is the official podcast from Podbean. Today's episode features an interview with Chris O'Keeffe from JAR Audio. JAR Audio creates branded podcasts for brands such as Lush, Royal Bank of Canada, Lululemon, and more.[00:01:04] - JAR Audio is a full service branded podcast agency that works with brands to build custom branded podcasts. It's a traditional agency model. Except instead of making creative campaigns or websites or commercials, jar Audio makes podcasts amazing. The company has a full marketing team that launches the podcast and promotes it and reports on it.[00:02:27] - Chris explains how he got into the podcasting industry. He is a writer and his writing partner wanted to create an audio drama in 2018. They invited industry people from Vox, Ringer and Gimlet to spend a weekend with them to create it. He helped launch and develop a show called "Disgraceland".[00:05:36] - In addition to building a career in podcasting, Chris also worked in content strategy and content marketing. He believes in value-driven content, going for telling, not selling, building relationships over the long term. He thinks the battle is being the sort of battle for understanding the value of audio storytelling.[00:09:33] - JAR Audio has worked with big brands such as Expedia, Amazon, T Mobile, Lush, Amex, British Columbia Institute of Technology and the Port of Vancouver. For RBC, they have a show called Disruptors, which has been a runaway hit. T-Mobile built trust with its audience by informing them about its products and services. T-Mobile works with a lot of journalists and takes a journalistic lens to its content marketing. It's important to have the brand strategy and the comms goals and the strategic goals overlaid with that and in tension with that.[00:17:53] - Branded podcasts can be either a panel discussion or a one-on-one interview with a host, or a hybrid format like a Radiolab with more rich sound design and a scripted section. "The Message" from GE is a great example of a branded podcast. Brand podcasting is achievable for brands as the cost is lower than television production. Hosted ads are getting more traction than ads that are read externally because people trust the host. It's an exciting time for brands to be able to tell stories specifically of their brand in an entertaining way and share their brand values. Branded content is changing quickly and it's exciting for the industry.[00:24:35] - In the podcasting landscape, how can companies differentiate their brand story? There is a lot of content out there that's branded podcasts or podcasts that are sponsored. It doesn't have to be JAR audio but you should find a partner in the industry. You can't create a show in a vacuum.[00:26:32] - The discovery phase of a podcast is a combination of art and science. It's a number of foundational workshops, creative ideation planning, competitor analysis, data analysis and creative support. Branding is a big part of the discovery phase and it's important to manage expectations of success.[00:30:52] - Marketing is important in the development of a brand-driven podcast. It's important to focus on the product rather than the brand. When it comes to branding, podcast marketing is important to get the best ROI on every dollar you spend. The best way to grow a podcast audience is to create a unique brand.[00:32:44] - JAR is a full service branded agency. Chris believes in focusing on content first and building trust with the audience. He is a big product person and believes that the best way to market a product is to make a better product and work hard on your product.[00:35:11] - In terms of companies seeing return on investment, they are seeing it. [00:37:29] - The ROI story is different. For each show and for each industry, there's a suite of tools and metrics that help clearly tell that story. [00:38:36] - Chris wants to work with brands that are not scared to have a point of view on social issues and environmental issues. Patagonia is one of his favorite brands now because of the stands that they've made. Chris is excited for the future of branded storytelling.[00:42:46] - Chris recommends working with experts who understand the space and starting exploration. Now. Chris' email is chris@jaraudio.com. If you want to talk directly about anything that they've spoken about today or disagree with him.[00:44:52] - Chris believes the podcasting industry is going to grow for at least the next half decade.
